Organic halides are a group of chemicals containing halogens from group 7 on the periodic table bonded with hydrocarbons. These include many common products, such as Freons (chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs) that are used in refrigerators and air conditioners, and Teflon (polytetrafluoroethene), which is a nonstick coating used in cookware and labware. They can also be found in nature where it may be benificial to an organism. While we use some organic halides in our everyday, lives, many others are toxic and some are also carcinogenic, so their benefits must weighed against potential hazards. Two such compounds, the insecticide DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) used in an electrical transformer, have been banned because of public concern of toxicity.

gina, we need to include at least one paper reference (zina said it'd give us a higher level). can we use the chemistry textbook, see what info we can get from there and reference it

i'm on msn
ok, if you look at the options page, there's things on there that take up a LOT of space (like 398 KB and 1000 something KB) that have to do with our topic, but that we didn't use in any of our pages (like the pdf that Mai sent us way back when)
so i think maybe that's what takes up a lot of the space.... so hopefully we're fine
